Background of the Study
Parental involvement has been identified as a critical factor in improving educational outcomes among primary school students. In Zaria LGA, Kaduna State, the active participation of parents in their children’s homework routines is viewed as a key contributor to academic success. Studies have shown that when parents are engaged in the learning process, students tend to exhibit higher levels of motivation, better time management, and improved academic performance (Nasir, 2023). In primary schools, homework serves not only as a reinforcement of classroom learning but also as a means for parents to monitor and support their children’s educational progress.
In recent years, initiatives aimed at fostering parental involvement have included workshops, regular parent-teacher meetings, and community outreach programs designed to educate parents on effective homework strategies. These initiatives emphasize the importance of a collaborative effort between the home and school environments in ensuring that students complete assignments diligently and benefit from continuous academic reinforcement. In Zaria LGA, efforts have been made to create platforms for dialogue between parents and educators, thereby promoting transparency and mutual understanding regarding students’ learning needs (Babatunde, 2024).
However, despite these initiatives, many primary schools continue to report challenges with homework completion. Factors such as parents’ work schedules, varying levels of literacy among parents, and limited understanding of the curriculum often impede effective parental involvement. Moreover, socio-economic constraints and cultural attitudes towards formal education further complicate the scenario, leading to disparities in the level of homework support provided at home. As a result, some students may fall behind academically, thereby perpetuating cycles of underachievement.
Against this backdrop, this study seeks to investigate the impact of parental involvement on homework completion in primary schools in Zaria LGA. By examining the correlation between the level of parental engagement and students’ homework performance, the research aims to identify best practices and potential obstacles. In doing so, it will contribute to a deeper understanding of how strengthening home-school partnerships can enhance educational outcomes and provide a framework for future policy interventions in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of parental involvement in homework, many primary schools in Zaria LGA struggle with low homework completion rates. The discrepancy between the ideal level of parental support and the reality in many households raises concerns about the overall effectiveness of current engagement strategies. Several schools report that while some parents actively assist with homework, others—due to work commitments, limited educational background, or lack of awareness—fail to provide the necessary support. This inconsistency often results in uneven academic performance among students and contributes to a widening achievement gap (Aminu, 2023).
Furthermore, the lack of a standardized approach to encouraging parental involvement means that strategies vary widely between schools. Some institutions have implemented regular parent-teacher meetings and educational workshops, yet these initiatives have not uniformly translated into improved homework completion. The problem is further compounded by socio-economic challenges, where parents in lower-income families may be less available or less equipped to assist with school assignments. In some cases, the absence of a supportive home environment not only affects homework completion but also diminishes students’ motivation and self-discipline.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to systematically assess how parental involvement influences homework completion in primary schools in Zaria LGA. This study aims to explore the existing challenges and identify actionable strategies that can foster greater parental engagement, thereby ensuring that students receive the support they need to excel academically. By addressing these issues, the research will provide critical insights for educators and policy makers seeking to develop interventions that bridge the gap between home and school, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes.
